Primordial Hydra MTG by chasestone Primordial Hydra MTG by chasestone
This was for a promo reprint of "Primordial Hydra". Since its a promo, I'm pretty sure the only way to get the card with this image is to purchase Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013 on xbox. Otherwise it will have the artwork by Aleksi Briclot (which is awesome).

Some people have said that the eyeless falcor look is off putting, so I just want to say up front that this was intentional. Who hasn't watched the Never Ending Story and wished that Falcor was several stories tall, had hundreds of heads, navigated by sound/smell alone and compelled chiefly by an insatiable blood lust?

I personally like that they have no eyes. It puts an interesting twist on things.

I've read the Never Ending Story, and watched it as well at some point. However, the only thing I wished for was a Falcor that was real and mine. But your hydra did remind me of Falcor nevertheless, so good job on that. ;)

Personally, I find this horrifyingly scary. More so than is normal.. Impressive work! I think the realistic-ness of the art is what makes this truly terrifying.. *shudders and shivers at near the same time with a tentative, wide-eyed, 'thumbs up' of approval*

The mammalian qualities are VERY unexpected, and combined with the eyelessness, make it VERY unsettling to look at. This has got to be the most primally terrifying hydra I've ever seen.

I love this hydra, someone at a tourney had it and gave it to me for beating him. Its my favorite card nick named fluffy and I've had him to a 560/560 with flying. Thank you for doing the wonderful art for this, I do plan to get one with Alesksi's art as well. MTG artists need lots of love!

That's one incredible beast.  I sometimes wonder if the legends for this critter were spawned from snakes.  I watched a documentary recently, and it appears that some species of snakes will literally gather in hoards around one particular female for mating rights.  I wonder if that mass of critters is what gave rise to this malevolent beast.

On other note: good use of distance to create a sense of size. It's what Jason Chan's painting lacks: perspective. Your work creates more impact because you introduced depth to the image. Good job.

Can I pet it? Please?

Don't worry about the comparisons with "eyeless Falcor" ! This hydra looks great, as does any eyeless creature (Giger's alien would've SUCKED if it had eyes). The fur is also a nice original take on the classical look of an hydra. You got the "primordial godly monster" feel without looking anything near Cthulhu, scales and tentacles 'n stuff... Another one of my favourites among your artworks.
Keldain Featured By Owner Jun 16, 2013
It's fluffy (or at least furry)! Personally, I think that's a great touch! Nice job! :D
