Groundshaker Sliver by chasestone Groundshaker Sliver by chasestone
Really happy with the way this one came out, everything came together very smoothly which doesn't happen all that often. Plus I think the new direction for the m14 Slivers is freaking cool, So it was just a lot of fun working on this guy.

I really like the new slivers. People will complain even if they stayed the same. It's nice for a change

May I ask, how you make these snakelike hair/vines/whatever? I think you used them for Steelform Sliver and Xathird Gorgo as well and I like them. :)
However, I like the way the illusion movement is done. And I like the rest, too, of course. Very nice.

You know, he looks mean, but he's got a great smile on his face :D At least from this angle...

Do you set up lighting references before starting a project? By this, I mean do you use a maquette or 3d model with a lighting scheme applied to it?

I've seen and heard of other artists doing this; taking photographs of friends or props under specific lighting conditions to use for original pieces.

Amazing as always. Your use of light is amazing. It's what I aspire to achieve with my paintings. I'm not even close, but I'm practicing. Keep up the great work. Absolutely amazing!

The light and movement in this image are really something. The splintering wood and rays of light hitting the creature are beautiful. Amazing work!

That's a sliver? (O_o) Looks very different from the others. This one seems truly angry and more monkey like.

Chase, are you allowed to tell us what the art director's plans for the slivers were? Rather, what directing did Mr. Jarvis do before you started drawing? I know only vaguely how the WotC art directing procedure works, and am curious as to how the new appearance for slivers came about.

Were slivers not weird 3 limb creatures ? Did they change that ?
Anyway, looks great, must be fullfilling if everything works out with "ease".

Blame the Art Directors of WOTC, just like everybody else that plays MTG, I preferred the old style of slivers too.

I can't imagine many old players liking the new direction slivers have gone. Blame the newer players of MTG.

Why should it matter what the style slivers have now vs old? I'm an old player and I think the new ones look just fine. There is no 'blame' to be lain. Acting as though the older players should have design decisions is exactly the reason why they don't. Elitist people make all gaming less fun for others, not just magic. Shame people can't seem to grow out of it.

I like this piece, but I feel the direction of it should be for something different like a non-sliver beast or something.

i dont like the new slivers at all, i think they are all awesome looking. but not slivers, yeh i get they are constantly evolving and all that fluff, but they were such a unique creature type with such flavourful design concepts. to be honest i wouldnt have even minded if they wrote a whole story arch for a standard 3 set block with a transition from old to new and a rich storied reason for how and why it happened. but instead we got m14.

it feels like they wanted something new that did what slivers did but also wanted it to benefit edh and other play variants so kept them as slivers.

A block full of Slivers? That sounds like a good idea. I came up with a theory that the Slivers are like the primitive cousins of the Phyrexians, we might get a MTG block devoted to the story of slivers who knows?

Makes for a nice Yautja, though.
Don't like the fact that paintings aren't anymore, and it turns more to "photoshopped" photorealism.
It's done on computer, and it shows more and more.
